Firefighters rescued a US Postal Service employee Monday after her hand became trapped in mail-sorting equipment at a postal processing facility in North Reading, officials said.
At 11:23 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a woman whose hand was caught in machinery at the Main Street facility, fire officials said.
They found a 60-year-old woman with her hand stuck between the conveyor belt of a sorting machine and a metal sorting tray.
Firefighters carefully cut and disassembled parts of the conveyor belt and metal frame, freeing the woman after about 30 minutes, officials said.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington for treatment, officials said. Details of her condition were not released.
North Reading Fire Captain Brian Nash credited firefighters’ training and technical skills during the operation.
“As firefighters, we train for all manner of technical rescue and extrication, and our firefighters relied on the tools of the trade and fell back on their training to conduct a safe and successful rescue,” Nash said in a statement.
