“Trying,” Apple TV’s dramedy about a couple’s journey to parenthood, returns for its fifth season on Wednesday. The series, which follows couple Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Ester Smith) on their journey to become parents in the aftermath of fertility troubles, finds the couple grappling with the return of their adopted kids’ biological mother (Charlotte Riley).
Jennifer Garner stars in the series adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s “The Five-Star Weekend,” out Thursday on Peacock. Garner stars as Hollis Shaw, a celebrity chef dealing with her grief over her husband’s death by gathering a group of people from different stages of her life for a Nantucket getaway. Understandable, when your gathering can draw Chloe Sevigny, Regina Hall, D’Arcy Carden, and Gemma Chan. Timothy Olyphant appears as Hollis’s first boyfriend, Jack, which is a fun little Easter egg for those of us who remember when they costarred in “Catch and Release,” in which Garner’s character falls for Olyphant’s … after the death of her partner.
The annual communal desert festival Burning Man gets the docuseries treatment with “The Man Will Burn,” out Thursday at 9 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max. The four-part series will offer an “intimate, behind-the-scenes look” at the event, according to press materials. Burning Man, long known as a countercultural event, now draws upward of 80,000 people each year, which has led to some growing pains.
J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver star in “The Westies,” out 9 p.m. Sunday on MGM+. Set in the ’80s, the series delves into the feud between the Irish gang The Westies and the larger and more powerful Italian mafia as construction on the Javits Center in Hell’s Kitchen proceeds. As the two groups battle for profit embedded in the process, their conflict threatens to spill into an ongoing FBI investigation into the Mafia.
