Your TV GPS, a look at the week ahead in television, appears every Monday morning on BostonGlobe.com. Today’s column covers Aug. 17-Aug. 23.
The long-running FX sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” returns today at 8 p.m. on FX. How long-running? Well, this is the 18th season. There’s something heartening about a show this filthy-minded making it last all these years, even as its core cast has seen tremendous success elsewhere (see: “Mythic Quest,” “Horrible Bosses,” “A.P. Bio,” and more). How Kaitlin Olson is in both this and “High Potential” at the same time is sort of mysterious (cloning? teleportation?), but I’m glad she’s making it work. Look out for guest stars Carol Kane and Nick Kroll this season.
Fans of nature documentaries can check out “Lion,” premiering Wednesday on National Geographic at 8 p.m. (it debuts on Disney+ and Hulu the next day). “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau executive produces this four-episode docuseries, which also features a score from Oscar winner Hans Zimmer. The series follows a young lion across four years, from his time as a cub to leading a pride. But come on, we’re here for those adorable lion cub moments, right?
Brookline native Conan O’Brien returns with the third season of his travel series “Conan O’Brien Must Go” Friday on HBO Max. There’s been a lot of talk about Anthony Bourdain recently because of the biopic “Tony,” but it’s safe to say that O’Brien brings a slightly different vibe to his travel show. This season sees him visiting the Netherlands, Morocco, the Philippines, and India. Highlights include getting praised for his more natural looking forehead in comparison to the waxy look of most celebs, though O’Brien, naturally, responds by trying to stretch the skin out to see how it might look with a bit of botox.
AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” series had a bit of fun this year by transforming into “The Vampire Lestat” and focusing on the music career of the Lestat (Sam Reid) character. Now, you can enjoy a full concert film of Lestat’s musical performance in “The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only LIVE,” streaming Sunday on AMC+. It is an actual concert he gave earlier this year, but as far as I know, he’s not a real vampire.
