Authorities have identified the woman killed by a vehicle when it barreled into a building on the campus of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain on Thursday morning.
Patricia McGrath, 68, of Dorchester, was sitting on a bench outside of the Belkin House when the car hit her, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said Friday. She was taken into the hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.
Two people in the vehicle were injured and also received medical help at the hospital. The crash ruptured a gas line, prompting the evacuation of more than 30 people as a precaution while crews checked for damage.
The crash closed the building, forcing the hospital to redirect dialysis patients to another site, officials said.
The crash is under investigation and no criminal charges have been filed, the district attorney’s office said.
The vehicle came to rest between the entrance to the parking garage and the front steps of the Belkin House, a standalone building that the hospital leases to a dialysis clinic.
Esmeralda Villar was leaving the hospital around 11 a.m. when she walked past the aftermath of the crash. She said she saw blood on the sidewalk outside the building. The driver appeared to be an elderly man, she said.
Villar said she was worried he may have hit the accelerator by accident.
The Belkin House remained closed Friday. The dialysis clinic redirected its patients to other sites, officials said.
“Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” MGB spokesperson Kelly Mitchell said in a statement Thursday, adding that the hospital extends its condolences to those affected.
