Charges pursued after multiple fights break out between students at Whitman-Hanson football game

Police are pursuing charges after two separate fights broke out at a Whitman-Hanson football game Friday night, during which one student stomped on another student’s head and another may have brandished a knife, according to police.

The involved students were spectators and part of the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District, Lieutenant Elisha Durgin of the Hanson Police Department said in an email to the Globe.

Whitman-Hanson Regional High School did not immediately respond to the Globe’s request for comment Saturday afternoon.

There were already two police details on scene when the first fight broke out during Whitman-Hanson’s game against Silver Lake Regional High School from Kingston, the department said in a statement.

They attempted to de-escalate the first conflict, but a student refused to comply with orders and allegedly assaulted the officers, according to the statement.

The student was taken to the Hanson Police Department to await a parent or guardian, Durgin confirmed. Criminal charges are being pursued against the student, who will be summoned to juvenile court at a later date.

The second fight occurred later in the game, during which one student allegedly “repeatedly kicked and stomped on another juvenile’s head.” A knife also may have been brandished at some point, but was not used in the fight itself, according to the statement and Durgin.

Several of the students involved in this second fight fled the area before officers arrived, police said. None of them have been taken into custody as of Saturday afternoon.

“Any potential charges [against those involved in the second fight] remain pending the completion of the investigation, including the identification of all involved parties and determining the role each individual played,” Durgin said.

As the students involved are all minors, no information was available regarding their identities.

Whitman police and the Hanson Fire Department also assisted on scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
