Three Red Sox are finalists for top defensive honors.
Third baseman Caleb Durbin joined perennial contenders Ceddanne Rafaela (center field) and Wilyer Abreu (right field) for American League Gold Glove Awards.
Winners will be announced Nov. 1.
Durbin is a first-time finalist after his first season with the Sox. He led AL third basemen in defensive runs saved (13) and outs above average (seven), two of the more all-encompassing modern defensive metrics — despite playing the second half of the season with an injured left pinkie that required surgery last week.
The other finalists at third base are Brooks Lee of the Twins and Nick Loftin of the Royals.
Rafaela is up for a second consecutive Gold Glove. He likewise led everyone in the league at his spot in DRS (21) and OAA (16). The Rangers’ Evan Carter and the Guardians’ Steven Kwan are Rafaela’s competition.
Abreu is trying to make it three Gold Gloves in as many full seasons in the majors. He topped the charts — every position, both leagues — with 28 DRS. But he picked up just two OAA. He is going against the Astros’ Cam Smith and the Blue Jays’ Nathan Lukes, who started only 87 games in right.
Gold Glove Award winners are determined 75 percent by a vote of major league managers and coaches, who can choose players only within their league and not on their own teams. The other 25 percent comes from advanced metrics.
Also on the awards-season front: Sox starter Sonny Gray was named a finalist for the AL Outstanding Pitcher Award, which is among the honors voted on by players and overseen by the players’ union. The Yankees’ Cam Schlittler and Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease are the other contenders.
