A 14-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly brought a loaded gun to a public high school in the Back Bay, police said.
He will be arraigned arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court for unlawful gun possession, carrying a loaded firearm on school grounds, possession of a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a permit, police said Thursday.
He was not identified because he is a minor.
Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the police department’s school engagement unit were patrolling near Boston International High School in Dorchester when someone alerted them that a student at Snowden International High School was “in possession of a firearm,” police said.
The school, located at 150 Newbury St., is part of Boston’s public school system.
At the school, a resource officer said he believed one of the students was carrying a firearm, police said.
Multiple officers found the student inside the school office and frisked him, finding a loaded Smith and Wesson gun without a serial number tucked into his waistband, according to police.
Guns without serial numbers are known as ghost guns because they cannot be traced.
The student was arrested, police said. There is no indication the firearm had been used on school property, police said.
A spokesperson for the Boston Public Schools declined to comment and directed inquiries to police.
In January 2024, a 15-year-old Snowden student was arrested and charged for bringing a loaded gun to school in his backpack in a similar incident.
