A man was charged with sexually assaulting two older adults in Newton in separate incidents near a local college this month, according to court records and school officials.
Sean Patrick Capalbo pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newton District Court to two felony counts of indecent assault and battery on a disabled person or person over 60, records show.
Capalbo was ordered held on $500 bail, which he couldn’t immediately post. He was sent to the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, court papers said.
His next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 24.
The alleged victims were attacked near Lasell Village, a retirement community on the campus.
Jennifer OKeefe , Lasell’s chief of staff and general counsel, had said in campus advisories that the first alleged assault occurred Oct. 7, and the second happened on Oct. 22.
In the first instance, “a male approached a female and touched her on the buttocks near the pond area behind Lasell Village. The male was not known to the female,” she said
In the second, “a male approached a female Lasell Village resident on Seminary Avenue, across from Eager House, and attempted to grope her,” she said.
He didn’t know her either, OKeefe said.
“He told her she had a spider on her and asked if she would like him to get it off,” OKeefe said. “The resident told him no, and he left the area. Campus Police believe this is the same person responsible for the October 7 incident.”
Camps police “will continue to work with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office as the cases move forward,” she said. She urged students and staff to report anything suspicious to the campus police.
In setting the $500 bail, Judge Hector E. Zumbado cited Capalbo’s record of convictions and the times he skipped hearings in the past, among other factors, records show.
Information on Capalbo’s prior convictions wasn’t immediately available.
