Local police and a SWAT team arrested a man at a Tewskbury motel Wednesday on a warrant and found two women in the room allegedly being held against their will, officials said.
Carlos Candelario, 36, of Lawrence, is charged with kidnapping, identity fraud, intimidating a witness and drug offenses, Tewksbury police said in a statement Thursday.
He was arraigned Thursday in Lowell District Court, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf to the charges, court records show.
He was ordered held without bail. His next court date is Nov. 2. for a dangerousness hearing, records show.
His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
At 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, local police learned that a man who was staying at a motel on Main Street in Tewksbury had an outstanding warrant from Lawrence District Court, police said.
“Based on [Candelario’s] criminal history,” police requested help from a regional SWAT team to serve the warrant, the statement said.
Candelario has previous drug and motor vehicle charges in Lawrence and Lowell district courts, which have been dismissed, according to court records.
Candelario was arrested at the motel around 6 a.m. Officials said he allegedly used fake ID documents to book the room.
Officers found two women in the motel room. During his arrest, Candelario allegedly threatened the women to prevent them from speaking with investigators, police said.
“A subsequent investigation indicated that Candelario had held them against their will,” the statement said.
Police said they also found 49.1 grams of “suspected cocaine.”
