Two teenage hikers on Mount Washington were rescued Tuesday after they were “caught by darkness” on a trail, officials said.
Around 5 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game officials were notified that Yahya Algaziand Jaden Green, two 18-year-olds from Rochester, N.Y., needed assistance on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, having gotten stuck after nightfall without lights a few miles up one of the mountain’s more challenging routes.
The sun set around 4:32 p.m. on Tuesday, according to TimeandDate.com.
The teenagers were “insufficiently prepared for their hike,” officials said in a statement. The pair awaited rescue at the Lakes of the Clouds AMC Hut, an overnight shelter that had closed for the season, officials said.
Around 7:15 p.m., rescue crews began hiking to the hut, about three miles up the trail. They arrived about two hours later and provided the teenagers with food, lights, and extra clothing. the group descended the trail on foot just after 10 p.m., officials said.
The group safely reached the base of the trail around 1:45 a.m., officials said.
“Everyone involved was happy to be out of the woods, and the hikers were grateful for the assistance,” officials said.
