Esther Mobley

Food Editor

About

Esther Mobley is The Boston Globe’s food editor. She joined the paper in 2026 after more than a decade on the San Francisco Chronicle’s food and wine team, where she served as senior wine critic. She was named Feature Writer of the Year in the 2019 Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ awards, and her work has been recognized by organizations including the Scripps Howard Awards, for coverage of California wildfires; the Society for Features Journalism, for coverage of climate change and wine; and the California News Publishers Association and Association of Food Journalists, for a story about a doomsday cult that happened to produce one of California’s greatest wines. She believes that food and drink stories can serve as lenses into our culture, our evolving sense of taste, and the way we live. Throughout her time in California, she never stopped preferring East Coast oysters.

Previously, Esther was an assistant editor at Wine Spectator magazine, a harvest worker at wineries in Napa Valley and Argentina, and a server at Boston’s now-closed L’Espalier restaurant. She is a Boston area native and a Smith College graduate.
