Tegan and Sara’s first live album doesn’t quite return to the duo’s formative days as an acoustic-slinging sister act, but with some songs featuring just the twins singing and strumming, it comes close at times. That might be intentional: “Get Along’’ has a definite sense of reflecting on where they’ve come from and a more nebulous hint of closing the door on one chapter of their career. Recorded at an invitation-only studio show, the CD/DVD combo doesn’t claim to capture a typical Tegan and Sara concert or even an unedited one; they’re a well-oiled snappy-banter machine, which is nixed entirely (and conspicuously) on the CD, and the DVD lacks any pretense of continuity, with the sisters ping-ponging between instruments from track to track without comment. The best performance is a casual but committed run-through of “Hell’’ recorded on a cold rooftop with zero fuss. Unfortunately, it’s a DVD throwaway that’s not on the album proper, which features subdued arrangements that limit the full band to light coloration and eschew the spikiness at the heart of Tegan and Sara’s best material. With her tendency to wear her heart on her sleeve, it’s Tegan’s songs like “I Hear Noises,’’ “Divided’’ and “I Won’t Be Left’’ that tend to make the most effective transitions, while the thornier compositions from recent albums “The Con’’ and “Sainthood’’ don’t fare as well. The songs on “Get Along’’ may be stripped down, but they’re not necessarily more intimate. Most of the time, they’re just smaller. (Out now)
ESSENTIAL “I Hear Noises’’ (album); “Hell’’ (DVD)
