Photographer Laura McPhee’s “The Home and the World: A View of Calcutta” (Yale University) is awash in colors, textures, and architectural details as it sweeps through extravagant mansions and crumbling dwellings. A professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, McPhee has been captivated by India since her first visit in 1998 as a Fulbright scholar. Her fascination and adoration is easy to see, especially in her portraits of people she encounters on the streets, whether her subject is a cotton-mattress fluffer holding the tool of his trade or a saleswoman carrying a bin of stainless steel kitchenware on her head.
