HomeServe agrees to pay $75,000 to settle misleading advertising complaint

A company that mailed ads designed to look like utility bills has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a case brought by the Massachusetts attorney general following a Globe report on the practice in February.

HomeServe, based in Connecticut, mailed more than 900,000 misleading solicitations in 2010 and 2011 to National Grid customers, the attorney general’s office said. The fliers offered optional services for heating equipment repairs.

The $75,000 will be placed in the state Consumer Aid Fund, which supports consumer protection programs. HomeServe must pay $10,000 of the attorney general’s costs.

HomeServe spokesman Myles Meehan called the $75,000 settlement a donation.

“We’ve agreed to make this donation . . . to improve the clarity that we have in our materials,’’ he said. “The company has not admitted any wrongdoing.’’
