Smart lightbulb company gets $1.5 million in seed funding

BeON Home, the Cambridge-based start-up whose smart lightbulbs double as a kind of home security system, has received $1.5 million in seed funding from the Dangold Investment Corporation.

The company creates LED lightbulbs that are designed to ward off burglars by turning on at the sound of a doorbell, on an internal timer, or via a smartphone app. BeON has also recruited Boston sports legends Ray Bourque and Vince and Bianca Wilfork to star in a series of videos touting the product as an effective defense for homeowners.

“Their first product takes a refreshing look at home security by focusing on prevention rather than reaction, and is clearly resonating with the market,” said Ashu Chalal, a partner at Dangold Investment Corporation.

BeON charges $199 for a three-pack of its bulbs, which it says is cheaper than many home security systems. The start-up is also still soliciting public donations through its Kickstarter page. With 16 days remaining in its campaign, the company has raised $80,000 of its $100,000 goal.
