Gasoline prices slide even lower in Mass.

Gasoline prices fell for the ninth consecutive week in Massachusetts, tumbling to an average of $1.77 a gallon on Monday, according to AAA Northeast.

The price for a gallon dropped four cents from last week and is at its lowest point since January 2009, due to an oversupply of crude oil, according to the nonprofit auto club.

The club’s survey found that prices for regular unleaded gas ranged from $1.61 to $1.94 a gallon. Two gas stations in Southbridge were selling a gallon of unleaded for $1.57, according to the website GasBuddy.com.

The national average price for gas is $1.74 a gallon on Monday.

It remains unclear whether prices have hit rock-bottom, as crude oil and gasoline inventories remain high. Last year around mid-February, prices climbed as oil refineries slowed their productions, said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast’s director of public and legislative affairs.

“We’ll be watching closely to see if that happens again this year,” Maguire said.
