Biotech giant Amgen Inc. will transfer an unspecified number of employees to its Cambridge research center as part of a corporate restructuring, the company said Monday.

Amgen spokeswoman Kristen Davis said the shift is part of a broader series of moves “to align and advance functional capabilities.” More than 100 workers are being cut from the research and translational sciences staff at Amgen’s headquarters complex in Thousand Oaks, Calif,, she said, with some being invited to relocate to Cambridge or San Francisco.

The company’s research center in Kendall Square, which recently expanded its footprint, now has about 400 employees.

Other biopharma companies, such as Novartis AG, Shire PLC, Sanofi SA, and Pfizer Inc. have also expanded their research operations in Massachusetts in recent years as part of reorganization moves that eliminated jobs elsewhere.
