US Representative William Keating (D-Mass.) is often in Washington, but when he is back in the Ninth District, he likes nothing more than spending time with his wife, Tevis (a retired flight attendant), at their waterfront home in Bourne. “The Cape is a destination place,” he said. “People travel from all over the world to go there, and we’re already there.” Keating, 62, is from Sharon, but moved to Bourne four years ago. The former Norfolk district attorney serves on several congressional committees and subcommittees, including Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs, and has been heavily involved in transportation security issues. We caught up with Keating to talk about all things travel.

Favorite vacation spot? Cape Cod: It’s a vacation destination and home — the best of both worlds. I am also a big fan of Rome. It’s absolutely the best place for food. You’d have to work really hard to get something that wasn’t excellent.

Favorite food or drink while vacationing? I try to go native: local seafood if it’s a coastal area, local microbrews or wines depending on the region.

Where would you like to travel to but haven’t? Hawaii. My father, when he was in the military, called it the best place he had ever been.

One item you can’t leave home without when traveling? I hate to say it, but my cellphone — except for when I was in Russia.

Aisle or window? Aisle. I’m tall, so it feels like more leg room.

Favorite childhood travel memory? As a young adult, going to Ireland — my grandparents’ homeland — with my father.

Guilty pleasure when traveling? Turning the cellphone off for a while.

Best travel tip? Don’t be hesitant to stop local people and ask for suggestions and advice. You’ll find experiences that aren’t in the travel brochures, but those will be some of your best memories.
