Doughboy statue to be rededicated

After a $20,000 restoration project, Amesbury’s famous Doughboy statue will be rededicated Sunday in a ceremony at the middle school. The statue of the World War I US soldier and the accompanying veterans’ memorial were originally dedicated in 1929, but had fallen into disrepair. The Newburyport Daily News reported that the Amesbury Veterans’ Memorials Restoration Committee’s efforts to fix it up were boosted by an anonymous $7,000 donation and two $3,000 donations from local banks. The Doughboy was sculpted by Leonard Craske, who is also known for sculpting the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial. (AP)
