Cambridge receives third threat this week against schools

Another anonymous e-mail shooting threat has been directed against schools in Cambridge and security will be stepped up again Friday, officials said.

The threat was directed at "cambridge mass middle schools," said School Superintendent Jeffrey Young and Police Commissioner Robert Haas in a joint statement.

Police informed the schools of the threat early Friday morning.

"Once again we are taking the threat seriously, proceeding with the utmost caution, and informing the public," the statement said.

Officials said they would take the same security precautions they took on Thursday, including a check of all buildings by police and school personnel before the school day; requiring students to enter only by the front doors of their buildings; and stationing police in all school buildings all day.

Police asked anyone who sees anything suspicious or unusual to call them at 911 or the non-emergency line, 617-349-3300.

In all, a similar e-mail threat was received by city officials on Tuesday, Wednesday night and now on Friday.
