Twelve-year-old arrested for bringing fake handgun to Dorchester school

A twelve-year-old boy was arrested on Friday for bringing a fake gun to his school, Dorchester Collegiate Academy, according to Boston police.

Shortly before 8 a.m., police responded to a report of a student carrying a gun at the charter school on Hancock Street.

The gun was found in a toilet tank in a school bathroom, and determined it to be aa .177 caliber paintball gun.

The youth was questioned by police at school, in the presence of his parents, and admitted that he had brought the gun to school, police said.

He was arrested on mulitiple charges, including possession of a firearm on school grounds, assault by means of a dangerous weapon (firearm), and intimidation of a witness.

He was arraigned in the juvenile session at Dorchester District Court later Friday. The incident occured just one month after Mayor Marty Walsh signed a city ordinance banning replica guns in public places.

In a statement, Police Commissioner William Evans said that the youth had “already expressed remorse for his actions”and that “hopefully he and his family can use this as a learning experience”.
