A boy’s hoverboard may have caused a fire in a Chelmsford home Monday evening, officials said.
The fire was contained to one room in the Monmouth Street home, Deputy Fire Chief Michael Donoghue said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Donoghue said the hoverboard — a self-balancing scooter that mimics the feeling of a floating transportation device — is a likely reason for the blaze. Pictures from the Fire Department show a charred and blackened hoverboard and a room with minor fire damage to the floor.
Donoghue said a young boy was home at the time but no one was injured.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission ruled last week that hoverboards on the market are not safe until they meet safety specifications because of “an unreasonable risk of fire to consumers.”
The commission urged retailers to review their products and determine whether they meet the standards.
Many area colleges, including Boston University, Brandeis University, and Boston College, have banned hoverboards.
