Fire crews from three communities descended on a large debris fire at an equipment yard in Hingham Sunday afternoon that sent billows of thick, black smoke high into the air.
Nobody was injured in the fire, and there was no property damage reported. But the smoke from the fire was visible for miles, sparking concern from observers around the Boston area.
The property on Old Hobart Road is used as an equipment yard, according to Bob Spirito, who said he uses it as storage for his construction company.
He said he believes the unseasonably warm weather helped spark the fire in a pile of wood shavings that accumulated from grinding stumps. It then spread to a pile of tires in the yard, he said.
Fire officials have not yet released an official cause of the fire.
Michelle Schaefer, 55, says she was sitting in the sunroom of her Old Hobart Street home Sunday afternoon when she heard “a big bang.”
She thought it was Spirito working, but then she saw flames and smoke through a window and called 911.
The fire was reported around 4:44 p.m. Fire officials from Hingham, Norwell, and Rockland battled the fire for more than an hour and had a majority of it put out by about 6:20 p.m..
Officials remained on scene Sunday night as they continued to put out spots that were smoldering, according to Hingham police.
