Fast Forward: Fighting hate crimes, a ‘Rocky’ anniversary, and damn it’s cold

Good morning ... here’s some news and information as you rev up for the day.

What’s it like outside? Bundle up, buttercup. It’s chilly today, mid-30s, but that damn wind will make it feel like it’s in the high teens or low 20s.

While you were sleeping: St. Louis police shot and killed a gunman early this morning whom they believed had shot a 46-year-old sergeant twice in the head Sunday night as he drove next to him. (The officer is expected to survive.) Police think the suspect had committed robberies, a carjacking and maybe even a homicide, and thought the officer he shot would recognize him ... A suicide bomber killed at least 28 people at a mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan this morning. No group has taken credit, but officials suspect ISIS or the Taliban.

Hey, sport: Al Horford and Jae Crowder are back, so maybe the Celtics will stop alternating wins and losses. Tonight they visit Minneapolis to take on the Timberwolves (8 p.m., CSNHD and 98.5 FM). Thank God for the Patriots. The Bruins are off.

We’re not sure what Donald Trump meant when he said he had “made of couple of deals” after meeting with potential appointees this weekend, but Americans everywhere have whiplash after watching Mitt Romney’s about-face. More people are expected to meet with the president-elect today, including former Texas governor Rick Perry. Trump is considering him to head an agency, but I can’t remember which one.

Trump’s communication team said an economic policy “landing team” will be announced today. Watch out below!

Fed up with the rise in racist and anti-Semitic episodes in Mass. and across the country since the election, the Anti-Defamation League and 20 other activist groups will rally at the State House at 11 a.m. Called Massachusetts Speaks Out Against Hate, the rally will be attended by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Attorney General Maura Healey, among other officials.

Speaking of hate, New York -- where hate crimes have increased more than 30 percent this year -- has set up a special police unit to deal with such crimes. The Southern Poverty Law Center is tracking reports of harassment and crimes, which thankfully appear to be diminishing. And apparently the “hijab grab” has become a thing, so a Muslim woman in Chicago is giving self-defense lessons to women who wear the headscarf.

Lowell police are searching today for what witnesses said was a gang of young women who beat up a 44-year-old woman Saturday night. The woman later died from her injuries.

That proposed public helicopter landing spot in Boston is up for discussion again when state transportation officials meet at noon. A helipad paid for by the state was one of the carrots dangled before GE to persuade it to move its headquarters to Boston.

Going to Chicago for Thanksgiving? The turkey may be cold by the time you get there. About 500 baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants at busy O’Hare International Airport in Chicago will announce at 10 a.m. when they intend to go on strike -- at one of the busiest travel times of the year. They want the right to organize and also a $15 per hour wage rate (some are paid the Illinois minimum wage of $8.25).

The International Emmy Awards will be given out tonight in New York. Even though nobody from the US can get an award, they’re held in NYC because that’s where the international academy is located, oddly enough.

Finally, 40 years ago today, the movie “Rocky” debuted in New York City. Sequels, as well as Sylvester Stallone’s subsequent turns as Rambo, eventually diminished the movie’s iconic status, but it’s difficult to overemphasize what a gigantic hit the film was back then. It smashed box-office records and garnered 10 Oscar nominations -- taking home three. Gonna fly now.
