Three-alarm fire damages Hyannis hotel

A three-alarm fire caused about $100,000 in damage at a Hyannis hotel Monday night, officials said.

The Hyannis Harbor Hotel on Ocean Street was filled with smoke by about 7 p.m. Monday, Barnstable Police Sergeant Sean Sweeney said.

The seasonal hotel is in the midst of renovations that will convert it into a year-round establishment, Sweeney said. The only people staying there at the time of the fire were construction workers.

Sweeney said it was lucky that fire officials got there quickly, because there were no sprinklers near where the fire broke out. They are not required under codes for seasonal hotels.

The fire began on the second floor of the hotel and spread to four rooms, Hyannis Fire Captain Thomas Kenney said.

Officials believe the blaze began in a ceiling fan in one of the rooms.

The fire was out by 11 p.m. Monday, Kenney said.

One firefighter was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for overexertion, but was released several hours later, Kenney said.

The hotel is expected to reopen next summer, and Kenney said the fire should not create too much of a delay.
