Heading to South Boston for Sunday’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade? Or participating in the neighborhood’s road race to benefit the local Boys & Girls Club?
Don’t bring your car, Boston police advise.
Instead, take public transportation or ride a bike from the city’s Blue Bikes sharing program, they said.
“Those coming into South Boston for the festivities are strongly encouraged not to drive their personal vehicles,” Boston police said in a statement Saturday.
Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the 117th edition of the parade, which steps off at 1 p.m. from near the Broadway MBTA Station.
Numerous street closings will be in effect for most of Sunday, according to police.
At 11 a.m., the South Boston Boys and Girls Club Road Race will start from the club on West Sixth Street.
The race will continue onto Dorchester Street and East Broadway, circle around the Farragut Statue at Day Boulevard, and head back onto East Broadway. The route will then head onto West Broadway and E Street before finishing around noon at the Boys and Girls Club at 230 West Sixth St., according to police.
Traffic will be delayed along the route during the race, police said.
Broadway will be closed to traffic from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The parade will begin at the Broadway MBTA Station on West Broadway and end on East Broadway at Farragut Road, according to the parade’s website.
MBTA buses that usually serve Andrew and Broadway stations will stop at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, but Red Line trains will continue to service both stations, the agency said.
However, trains may bypass the Broadway station at various times “to prevent unsafe crowding on the platform,” the MBTA said on its website.
The agency advises parade-goers to take the Red Line to South Station, where shuttle buses will run to the parade route from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the transit agency said on its website.
The buses will stop at the Summer Street side of South Station and Summer Street at East First Street in South Boston.
Keolis Commuter Services will also run trains with extra seating capacity Sunday, the MBTA said.
Travelers should leave backpacks and water bottles at home, the MBTA said. Transit Police and customer service representatives will be available in stations and on trains throughout the day.
Parking will be restricted on the following streets:
■ West Broadway from Dorchester Avenue to Dorchester Street
■ East Broadway from Dorchester Street to Farragut Road
■ Farragut Road from Columbia Road to East First Street
■ Dorchester Avenue from Gillette Park to Old Colony Avenue
■ East First Street from Farragut Road to O Street
■ West Sixth Street from F Street to Dorchester Street
The restrictions also apply to F Street from West Sixth Street to Bowen Street, on the side where the Boys and Girls Club sits, police said.
