Boy struck by boat in Mashpee lake, official says

A 12-year-old boy from Worcester suffered a serious laceration to his leg after he was struck by a boat in a Mashpee lake Tuesday evening, a fire official said.

Fire Lieutenant Nicole Stanley referred to the incident as a “tubing accident,” but did not elaborate.

Firefighters responded to Wakeby Lake shortly before 6 p.m. after a receiving a report that a “boat had drove over a child” in the middle of the lake, said Stanley.

Firefighters suspect the boy was injured by a boat’s propeller, she said, but they did not know that for sure.

Family members of the victim were able to pull the boy out of the water and get him to a boat ramp on the shore, said Stanley. The boy suffered a “serious laceration” to his lower leg, but was conscious while first responders tended to his wound, said Stanley.

The boy was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.
