MS-13 gang member convicted in Maverick Station shooting

An MS13 gang member originally from East Boston but who was living most recently in New York was convicted Wednesday by a Suffolk Superior Court jury of shooting a rival gang member and a bystander at the MBTA Blue Line station at Maverick Square two years ago, officials said.

Rogelio Alvarado, 23, of Huntington, N.Y., was found guilty of two counts of assault and battery by discharging a firearm and single counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said in a statement.

He was acquitted of an additional count of armed assault with intent to murder, the statement said.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 20.

Alvarado was accused of having a gang-related conflict with a 29-year-old passenger on the Blue Line on Jan. 19, 2016. The two men got off the train at Maverick Station in East Boston, where Alvarado shot the man twice at close range. A man exiting the train was grazed by a bullet to his face, the statement said.

The two men survived their injuries. Alvarado fled the train station and took a taxi back to New York, officials said. A warrant for his arrest was issued by Boston Transit Police on Jan. 25.

He was arrested by Huntington police on July 12, 2017, after driving the wrong way on a road, forcing other drivers off the road, prosecutors said.
