The Boston City Council Wednesday unanimously approved a new contract with the city’s firefighters union, according to a mayoral spokeswoman.
The Globe reported last week that Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s administration reached a four-year pact with the union, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 718.
The new contract, which is retroactive to July 1, 2017, will run throughJune 30, 2021. Its terms are similiar to other agreements the mayor has recently reached with city unions – a 2 percent pay raise each year – though it includes other adjustments to compensation such as increases in night differential and hazardous duty compensation.
The union has already voted to ratify the contract, and Walsh is expected to sign the agreement either this week or early next week, according to a spokeswoman from his office.
“The City of Boston and the firefighters unions have together reached a fair and affordable agreement that ensures Boston’s firefighters will continue to be safe and protected as they put their lives on the line every day,” said Walsh in a statement. “This agreement is a result of good faith negotiations to better serve our first responders, building on the City’s continued investment and prioritization of their health, safety and well-being.”
