Revere to become sister city of Date, Japan

An evolving partnership between Revere and the Japanese city of Date will become formalized Tuesday, Aug. 2 with the signing of a Sister City agreement at City Hall. Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo and Shoji Nishida, the visiting mayor of Date, are set to sign the agreement on behalf of their respective cities at an 11 a.m. ceremony in the City Council chamber. The two cities have maintained a cultural exchange program for more than 20 years that has enabled Revere students to visit Date and their Japanese counterparts to come to Revere. “This agreement formalizes the friendship between our two cities, and lays the groundwork for many more decades of cooperation,” Arrigo said in a statement. A community of about 62,000 residents in northern Japan, Date has a mainly agricultural economy, producing rice, peaches, and persimmons. Date also has a partnership with Elizabethtown, Ky., formalized in 1992. At Tuesday’s event, the two mayors will also exchange gifts and take photos with exchange students and elected officials. Later, they will tour some of Revere’s municipal buildings.
