Rockport officials expect a big turnout for Town Meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the high school, where the biggest item is a zoning article that could clear the way for the sale of recreational marijuana in portions of town. Among those who’ll speak to either side of the issue are two members of the Board of Health, doctors Syd Wedmore and Bruce Cohen. “My main thrust is, it makes sense to decriminalize marijuana, but I’m not sure it makes sense to have marijuana shops in every village and town,” said Wedmore, board chairman. After studying the impacts on teenage drug use and public safety in Washington and Colorado, Cohen determined that it likely wouldn’t have a big impact. “We can maintain our quality of life we all cherish in Rockport,” said Cohen. An information session on the marijuana debate is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Rockport High auditorium.
