Norwood’s student magazine show wins coveted award

Norwood High School’s student Mustang Magazine television program has won a 2016 NSPA Pacemaker Award, a first for the school.

The program, a monthly news show written and produced by students, takes more than a month each to make, said anchor/reporter Giuliana Schallmo. “The schedule can be challenging, but this award shows that our hard work is paying off,” she said in an e-mail.

“Everybody loves what they do and are proud of their work,” said director Dan French.

Norwood broadcast journalism teacher Jeb Brunt said the students know to ask the right questions and understand how to be fair and balanced. “Some professional outlets could get a few pointers from these kids,” he said.

The Pacemaker Award, given out by the National Scholastic Press Association, is the highest achievement available to journalism students at the high school level.

Several Norwood students also received individual honors. Sadie Krall, Danny Sullivan, Taylor Reed, and Toni Giffin were honored with a fourth and ninth place for their news and sports features.

The Mustang Magazine show has been running for four years and will be airing its 40th episode this month. The program features segments about academics, arts, athletics, and other activities.

All student content produced by NHS-TV is broadcast on Norwood Public Access Television and online at www.mustang.media.
