In her time as a candidate, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been ready to clap back at criticism, often on social media. So it was no surprise that the newly minted congresswoman was ready with a cheery dancing video after an edited clip of her dancing in college went viral Thursday.
In the new video, posted around noon Friday, Ocasio-Cortez points at the camera and spins around as she jams to “War (What is it Good For)” just outside her D.C. office door.
The video ends with a laugh before she returns inside the office suite.
Ocasio-Cortez’s lighthearted response came less than a day after some Twitter users tried to use the college dancing clip to invite mockery, an attempt that backfired in the form of a flood of tweets from people calling the video fun and relatable.
The full original video that went viral Thursday was filmed in 2010 at BU, according to the school’s website, and was an homage to a YouTube trend that was sweeping the nation at the time, called the “Brat Pack Mashup.”
The four-minute montage of students in BU gear is a riff on dance scenes from the popular 1980s films that featured the so-called “Brat Pack,” such as “The Breakfast Club.”
Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University’s College of Arts & Sciences in 2011 with a degree in economics and international relations.
