SCHOOL ROUNDUP

Watertown field hockey team blanks Arlington

Five goals in the first half, one more in the second, a shutout for sophomore goalie Jonna Kennedy and her defense, and another win for Watertown’s foolproof field hockey team.

Watertown’s 6-0 victory over Arlington in its first game of the year on Wednesday pushed the school’s unbeaten streak to 139 games.

“We still have a lot of things to work on,” said longtime coach Eileen Donahue, whose record-breaking unbeaten streak dates back six seasons. “But I think we were working with a nice flow going up and down the field.”

The room for improvement Donahue talks about is a relative term for the Red Raiders, who didn’t concede a goal in any of their 22 games last year. Not only did they keep this particular streak going with their win on Wednesday, the Watertown defense didn’t even allow a shot on goal.

“Again, I think we have things to work on,” said Donahue, “but the defense played well to not allow a shot on goal.”

Four goals came courtesy of senior Kourtney Kennedy, who set the tone early by scoring in the fifth and the seventh minute.

Senior Michaela Antonellis and junior Olivia Venezia added the other two goals for Watertown.

For Donahue’s squad, which lost six seniors from last year’s team, the approach for this season’s opener was no different than it’s been since she took over as coach in 1986.

“We aren’t thinking about what happened in the past, we are only focused on what’s going to happen in the next game,” said Donahue. “Every year we have a new group of kids and right now we’re trying to figure out how to play together.”
