Fumes in a train car forced the cancellation of a morning train Thursday on MBTA Commuter Rail’s Fitchburg line, officials said.

The commuter rail operator, Keolis, said the 7:30 a.m. train from Boston to Fitchburg returned to North Station “shortly after departing this morning after passengers reported smelling fumes in one coach. No mechanical issues were found, and the fumes were likely caused by a passenger. The train was cancelled, and passengers were accommodated by later trains.”

A passenger told the Globe they thought “something was released” on the train and said they experienced burning and nasal irritation.

“[It] was in the front car at the rear of it. I don’t know what it was,” said the rider, who requested anonymity via email. “It caused burning in mouth [sic] and nasal passage and some people had trouble breathing. ... EMS came eventually. One person opted to go to ER. I opted not to. But she is going to let me know what they say at ER.”
