Thank you to Adrian Walker for his column about the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston, Marcelo Suárez-Orozco (“He believes in UMass Boston,” Metro, April 3). Suárez-Orozco talks about the “need to teach [students] about climate and the science of climate.” Some years ago there were initiatives to teach environmental courses in the sciences and an environmental focus across the whole curriculum. In fact, teachers in the English department worked with the biology department to develop and offer courses that combined composition and the sciences, particularly in biology and environmental science. It was then, as it is now, a match that came to mind just by looking out the window at the Atlantic Ocean.
