Edward S. Hershfield’s May 8 letter questions why students are protesting the US role in Gaza and not numerous other injustices around the world, with the unstated implication that it must be antisemitism (“Protesters’ motivations are an issue for some”).
While Hershfield notes that our country has played a role to some degree in the other cases, the fact is that the United States supplied weapons being used in Gaza and did not supply those being used against the Uyghurs in China, by the Russians in Ukraine, by the Iranians against women, etc. Furthermore, Israel is America’s ally; China, Russia, and Iran are not.
Americans do hold Israel to a higher standard, and they should. We do not expect American bombs to be dropped on helpless families.
