A 500th strikeout, a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year enters the portal, and more HS takeaways

The second day of the spring season saw the game total ramp up a little more, especially from the softball and lacrosse fields.

It also saw a few more local alumni enter the collegiate transfer portal, including a two-time Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year. Browse through all the day’s news, from top individual performances to athletic directors being honored on the Cape.

1. Milestones

▪ With a whopping 16 strikeouts, Abington seniore Elsie Testa eclipsed 500 career strikeouts, allowing one run in an 11-1 victory over Pembroke.

▪ North Reading girls’ lacrosse senior Alaina Driscoll scored four times, adding an assist as she reached 100 career points in a 13-6 season-opening win over Pentucket.

▪ A trio of girls’ lacrosse coaches picked up their first wins, including Jessica Gambale with St. Mary’s (13-3 over Triton), Christian Oakley with Mashpee (16-10 over Monomoy), and Colby Brochu with Northbridge (18-2 over Assabet).

2. Ten stars

Shannon Balfe, Whitman-Hanson — The senior netted the overtime winner, her sixth of the day, in a 13-12 girls’ lacrosse triumph over Oliver Ames.

Jenna Callahan, Attleboro — The senior was perfect at the plate, finishing 4 for 4 with four doubles, while also striking out eight in the circle during a 13-2 softball victory vs. Canton.

Eva Cannalonga, North Reading — The junior posted a career-high 7 points, scoring three goals with four assists, to defeat Pentucket, 13-6, in girls’ lacrosse action.

Nolan Craven, Pope Francis — The sophomore stacked up 9 points, scoring six times and dishing three assists in a 14-10 girls’ lacrosse win over Westfield.

Nick D’Anna, Malden — The sophomore cracked a pair of triples, knocking in four runs as Malden baseball cruised past Salem Academy, 10-0.

Callie Dunn, Mashpee — The freshman got her season started in style, going 5 for 5 at the dish with four RBIs in a 19-5 softball win over Randolph.

Frankie Iovanna, Duxbury — The sophomore not only struck out eight in a seven-inning pitching performance, but she went 3 for 3 at the dish with a home run to beat Norwell softball, 12-1.

Sophia Morin and Ciara Hendricks, Mashpee — The two seniors combined for 13 goals, with Morin providing seven and Hendricks scoring six in a 16-10 girls’ lacrosse victory over Monomoy.

Caitlin Sweeney, Latin Academy — The senior finished a double shy of the cycle, providing a home run, triple, and single to the Dragons’ 17-0 softball win over Martha’s Vineyard.

3. Going, going, gone

A chilly Friday didn’t diminish the power from these softball players, who all notched home runs: Duxbury sophomore Frankie Iovanna, Oliver Ames junior Katie Berg, West Bridgewater eighth-grader Lacey Roche, Latin Academy senior Caitlin Sweeney, Abington seniors Savvy Eriksen and Liv D’Ambra, and Attleboro junior Lola Ronayne and sophomore Avery Graziosi.

4. On the move

A two-time Massachusetts Gatorade boys’ basketball Player of the Year selection is on the move.

Jaylen Harrell, who won the award in 2024 and 2025 while at CATS Academy, told On3 Sports that he will be entering the transfer portal after one season at Providence.

“This was completely my decision,” he wrote on social media. “Still look forward to rooting for all of Friartown.”

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound wing, a Boston native who started his high school career at St. Sebastian’s, played in just six games, his freshman season cut short in early December by torn meniscus. He averaged 3.7 points in nine minutes per game.

Harrell was the No. 85 recruit in the Class of 2025 according to 247Sports and Rival and No. 88 per On3.

Harrell is the latest in a series of local college hoopers who have entered the transfer portal.

Among them is Quinnipiac’s 6-3 junior Anna Foley, an Andover graduate, who is entering the portal after averaging 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 21.8 minutes per game, including five starts in 34 games. She has scored 1,107 points in three seasons.

5. Commitment Central

▪ Austin Prep senior Grace Buser committed to compete in track and field at Catholic University. She owns the AP school record in the 55-meter hurdles.

▪ Bishop Stang senior Brock Winslow has committed to play football and baseball at Mass. Maritime. Winslow played quarterback on the gridiron and plays shortstop on the diamond for the Spartans.

6. MSSADA honors

The Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association held its annual convention in Hyannis this week.

Nipmuc AD Christopher Schmidt was named Athletic Director of the Year. In his 11th year at Nipmuc, he has served as the MIAA’s District 2 chairperson and is a certified NIAAA instructor who has helped train approximately 50 athletic directors statewide.

“To be acknowledged by one’s peers is a great honor,” Schmidt said in a statement. “I am privileged to be able to share this award with a community that has been so supportive these past 11 years.”

Shrewsbury AD Jay Costa received the NIAAA State of Merit award and Dartmouth AD Andy Crisafulli received the NIAA Distinguished Merit Award. Hingham AD Jim Quatromoni received the Richard E. Lewis award
