Five Top 20 teams faltered, an all-time rushing record was set, and St. Mary’s hosted Marblehead in an emotional game just a week after the tragic death of Magicians senior captain Owen Coyne.

Let’s break down all of Friday night’s action.

1. The coverage

The milestones

▪ There is no doubt Grayson Foley will long be remembered in the halls of Scituate High, but on Friday night he made certain.

The senior running back rumbled for 195 yards and five touchdowns in a 41-6 win over Quincy, surpassing 1,000 yards for the season (1,016) and usurping Dawayne Kirton (3,241) as the school’s all-time rushing leader. Foley will enter Week 6 with 3,332 yards and counting.

▪ Bellingham senior libero Sophia Soto reached 1,500 career digs with nine in a 3-0 girls’ volleyball win over King Philip.

▪ Newton North senior goalie Juliette Winston recorded her 250th save in a 2-0 field hockey shutout of Newton South.

▪ On Monday, Pingree girls’ soccer senior Shauna O’Brien reached 100 career points with two goals in a win over Phillips Andover. After a four-goal game to beat Winsor 8-0 on Friday, O’Brien is up to 109 career points.

The upsets

Five of the Globe Top 20 took an ‘L’ on Friday night, including four of the top 12.

No. 4 Xaverian, the three-time defending Division 1 champions, suffered their third loss, allowing St. John’s (Shrewsbury) to score the final 21 points in a 42-22 home loss. The Pioneers got five TD passes from Brad Perry, who found Zacchaeus Collins three times for scores, including a 90-yarder.

No. 8 North Attleborough fell to 2-2 following a 26-14 loss to King Philip, which has won three in a row after dropping its first two games of the season. The Warriors got a boost from freshman Ethan O’Connell, a transfer from Archbishop Williams who ran for 92 yards and three scores.

Sophomore QB Ethan Edmunds led Franklin past No. 9 Milford, 17-14, with help from Owen Webster, who drilled a 25-yard field goal, which proved the difference.

No. 12 Bishop Feehan fell to 2-3 with a 28-21 road loss to Barnstable, which got a 17-yard fourth-quarter TD pass from Chris Friel to Jackson Khoury to seal the win.

No. 18 Billerica was beat, 35-12, by No. 16 Tewksbury, which rode four total touchdowns from Will Harrison to victory.

Longest plays

A week after a bevy of long kickoff returns, the longest plays of Week 5 came on the ground.

Central Catholic’s Caden Smith enjoyed the longest of all, a 98-yard scoring scamper in the fourth quarter of a 49-16 victory over Methuen. Not far behind was Rockland’s Marvelous Pleasant, who broke off a 94-yard TD run in a 34-13 win over Bristol-Plymouth.

The longest pass play of the night saw Brad Perry of St. John’s (Shrewsbury) connect with Zacchaeus Collins for a 90-yard scoring strike, one of three TD connections between them while beating Xaverian, 42-22.

Canton’s Brody Baldiga had an 80-yard touchdown run in a surprising 28-7 win over Foxborough, and Swampscott’s Jameson O’Keefe raced 73 yards to pay dirt in a 36-18 win over Greater Lawrence.

Crowning champs

▪ Andover golf clinched the Merrimack Valley Conference crown by defeating North Andover, 228-242, and Methuen, 228-243, at the Merrimack Valley Golf Club.

▪ Amesbury boys’ cross-country clinched at least a share of the Cape Ann League’s Baker Division with a win over Manchester Essex earlier this week.

12 stars of the day

Owen DeSalvo, BB&N — The junior was everywhere, rushing for 148 yards, including a 71-yard scamper to open the scoring, and picking off two passes in a 39-7 win over Lawrence Academy.

Cole Doyle, North Quincy — Another big performance from the junior had him tossing four TD passes and running for a fifth score to lead the Raiders past Pembroke, 39-12. He completed 13-of-18 passes for 230 yards, finding Connor Lynch nine times for 184 yards.

Nick Jordan, Grafton — The junior snagged three interceptions, running one back for a 55-yard score while adding 126 yards and two TDs on the ground in a 21-14 win over Westborough.

Coleman Keuchkarian-Mckeen, Watertown — The senior had a hand, or a leg, in six touchdowns during a 54-0 rout of Wakefield, tossing four TD passes and running for a pair of scores.

Akhai Marshall, Lincoln-Sudbury — The senior totaled 201 yards of offense, with 158 and two TDs on the ground and 43 and a score through the air during a wild 45-42 shootout win over Wayland.

James Pasquale, Lynnfield — He not only finished with 183 receiving yards and two scores in a 35-15 triumph over Essex Tech, but the senior also threw a touchdown.

Santos Santiago, Randolph — A Swiss Army knife performance saw the senior run for a score, pass for a score, return a kickoff for a score, and snare an interception in a 35-20 win vs. Mashpee.

Logan Strunk, Barnstable — Another massive defensive performance, this one featuring four interceptions from the senior to beat Bishop Feehan, 28-21.

Chris Vargas and Riley Selvais, St. John’s Prep — Vargas’s slow star to the season hit the accelerator Friday, as the junior completed 10 of 12 passes for 288 yards and four touchdowns, finding fellow junior Selvais six times for 191 yards and three scores to crush BC High, 43-6.

Nathan Zexter, Bishop Stang — A week after running for 256 yards and four scores, the senior ran for three more in a 40-18 win over Cathedral, adding a 19-yard field goal and a pair of 2-point conversions.
